About me
Hello, I'm
Barbara Hoyer.
I am a systemic coach, trainer and consultant for leadership, team development and organisational development – and the founder of Happy Works.
Thinking people and organisations together.
I work with people. And with organisations. Most of the time I keep both in view. Because surprisingly often the problem is not where it is first assumed to be. And whoever changes something in one place almost always sets something in motion elsewhere as well.
For over 20 years I have been working around leadership, learning & development and organisational development: as an HR developer, leader, academy director, trainer, coach and consultant. I know international companies and mid-sized businesses as well as NGOs and the social and public sector – and with them very different cultures, logics and ways of working together.
What I have learned: engagement cannot be decreed. And even the best workshop does not repair structures that constantly slow people down in everyday work.
That is why I like to look more closely – and not only where a problem happens to be visible. What happens between people? Which patterns have developed in the team? What does leadership make possible – and what perhaps not? Which structures and conditions play a part? Because usually one thing is connected to the other.
Sometimes the next step lies in coaching. Sometimes a leadership team needs an honest conversation. And sometimes it is worth working on roles, structures or decision paths instead of booking yet another training.
So you will not find off-the-shelf solutions with me.
What drives me
I founded Happy Works in 2014 – out of the wish to actively help shape good work.
What does that mean for me? Certainly not that everyone has to be “happy” at work all the time. That would probably be asking a bit much.
I am much more interested in the conditions under which people can work well and organisations can be successful. For me that includes trust and responsibility, equality and diversity – but also a conscious approach to the resources available to us: our time and energy, technology and, not least, our environment.
And I am curious about how work continues to evolve and how we can actively shape change.
I do not have the finished answer to all of this – and I do not need to. What I bring is experience, curiosity and a great appetite for looking closely together, questioning things and developing fitting answers.

How I work
For me, good collaboration begins with trust and the right chemistry. When both are there, we get going.
I listen, ask questions, structure, give honest feedback and also name difficult things. And usually all of that happens in my workshops – including laughter. Because clarity, depth and lightness are not mutually exclusive for me.
I do not work through the head alone. Depending on the topic, I include body awareness, movement, constellations or nature. Some things simply become clearer when we do not think about them for the fifth time but actually change perspective.
I particularly enjoy being a sparring partner for leaders and leadership teams. Because the greater the responsibility, the rarer an honest “I see that differently” often becomes. That is exactly what I create space for.
And otherwise?
Fun facts
Three countries – and somehow at home in between.
I am Danish, grew up in France and have lived in Germany for over 20 years. I work in German, English and French. On long days a French expression occasionally slips into my German – and by now sometimes even the other way round.
Train instead of company car.
I do not own a car and am a committed user of trains, public transport and bicycles. Many concepts were actually created while travelling. Some thanks to excellent inspiration. Others thanks to unplanned generous travel times. ;-)
Two teenagers as a reality check.
I have two teenage children and therefore a decidedly demanding practice field for topics such as self-leadership, communication and resilience. Who is actually developing whom has not yet been conclusively established.
Going outside helps.
I like being in the forest, by the water and in the mountains. That is why I gladly move coachings, workshops or parts of a team development outdoors. A surprising number of stuck thoughts start moving again as soon as we do.
